How to Repair Door Glass

Here is your directions on how to repair door glass. Doors with beautiful glass allow more light and a refreshing glow to any home. Fixing a storm door with broken glass or screen is simple, but when your glass breaks in your main metal, vinyl or wooden door, the problem doesn’t seem as easy. Don’t worry! If you’re wondering how to repair door glass, it is simple and easy with tips from DIY Door Store!

Before you get started replacing your door glass, there are a few things you will need:

  • Measuring Tape
  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Heavy work gloves
  • Pliers
  • Metal putty knife
  • Glazing compound
  • Razor blade
  • Glaziers’ points
  • Flat blade screwdriver

Removing Door Glass

To remove the broken or shattered glass from your door, you first want to put on heavy work gloves and remove the broken glass by pulling it out or using the pliers to pull out smaller shards. After all the glass has been removed, you will want to take your metal putty knife blade and run it around the old caulk, that sealed the glass in the door, and remove it. When you’ve finished removing the caulk, pry out the metal glazing points from the opening.

Repairing Door Glass

After you’ve removed the old broken or shattered glass, measure the glass pane and write down the dimensions. Take those dimensions to a local hardware store and have them cut a piece of glass to the correct size. Be sure to tell them what type of door it will be used in so they can provide the correct piece of glass for you. When you have your replacement piece, run a bead of glazing compound around the perimeter of the window pane opening. Place the new glass into the opening in the door and press it firmly into the compound. Insert the pointed end of the metal glazing points into the edge of the window. Space them evenly around each edge, and about 1 inch away from each corner. Use the putty knife blade to help push the glazing point into the door. Scrape off the excess glazing compound with your razor blade or a rag.
