Before You Order: The Three Measurements You Need to Know

Your door glass insert has three different dimensions. They sound similar but are not interchangeable. Using the wrong one is the #1 reason for ordering the wrong size. All DIY Door Store products are listed by visible glass size (also called "actual glass size" on our size filter pages).

Measurement	What It Is	Example
Visible Glass Size (a.k.a. "Actual Glass Size")	The glass you can see from the front of the door — edge to edge between the frame lips. The physical glass pane extends slightly behind the frame overlap, but you measure only what is visible. This is the size listed on all DIY Door Store products and the size you should order.	22" x 36"
Door Cut-Out Size	The rectangular hole machined into your door slab. This opening is exactly 1" larger than the visible glass size in each direction — the extra inch allows the frame lip to seat against the door face on all sides.	23" x 37"
Outside Frame Size (O.D.)	The full outer dimensions of the assembled frame unit — the maximum footprint as it sits on your door. Approximately 1-3/4" to 2" larger than the visible glass in each direction (± 1/4" depending on brand and frame profile). You generally do not need this measurement to order — it is listed here so you can verify a replacement will cover your existing frame footprint.	~23-3/4" to 24" x ~37-3/4" to 38"

Quick Conversion Rule: If you measured the door cut-out (the bare hole with the insert removed), subtract 1" from both width and height to get the glass size you need. Example: 23" x 37" cut-out → order a 22" x 36" insert. For more detail, see our glass sizing guide.

Does a door glass insert come with the frame?

Yes. Our glass insert kits ship as complete assemblies that include the insulated glass unit (IGU), the interior frame, the exterior frame with factory weather seals, mounting screws, and frame plugs. You do not need to buy the frame separately. If you need only the frame without glass, look for products labeled "Frame ONLY (No Glass)".

Can I replace just the glass insert without replacing my entire front door?

Yes. If your door slab is structurally sound but your glass is fogged, cracked, or yellowed, you only need to replace the insert assembly. The glass and frame unit unscrews from inside the door and the new one drops into the same cut-out. Most homeowners complete the swap in 30–45 minutes with a Phillips screwdriver. How do I know what size glass insert fits my door?

Measure the visible glass in your current insert — width first, then height. The two most common residential sizes are 22x36 (half lite) and 22x64 (full lite). Do not measure the frame surround or the door cut-out, as those dimensions are larger than the glass size. If you measured the cut-out instead, subtract exactly 1 inch from both the width and height to determine your glass size (example: a 23" x 37" cut-out takes a 22" x 36" insert). Will a glass insert fit my Therma-Tru / JELD-WEN / Masonite door?

Our glass insert kits fit standard residential entry doors from Therma-Tru, JELD-WEN, Masonite, Taylor, Pease, Stanley, Castlegate, and Perma Door. These manufacturers use the same industry-standard cut-out dimensions. Verify your visible glass size matches one of our available sizes (22x36, 22x64, 20x64, 20x36, 22x48, 8x36, 8x64) and that your door is standard 1-3/4" thick.

What is the difference between Glass & Frame and Frame ONLY?

A Glass & Frame kit is a complete replacement unit: insulated tempered glass plus interior and exterior frames, screws, and plugs. A Frame ONLY product includes only the frame surround without glass. Order Glass & Frame if your glass is damaged or fogged. Order Frame ONLY if your glass is still clear and sealed but your frame is cracked, warped, or UV-damaged.

Are these glass inserts energy efficient?

Yes. All glass insert kits use insulated, double-pane tempered glass with an argon gas fill between the panes. This provides thermal insulation equivalent to the factory-installed insert. The replacement frames include integrated weather seals to prevent drafts.
