What You Will Need to Repair a Broken Glass Panel:

  • Tape Measure
  • Putty knife
  • Hammer
  • Nails
  • Caulking gun
  • Glazing-compound caulk
  • Wire brads
  • New glass (safety glass is recommended)

Measure Area for New Glass in Wooden Door

When you are measuring for glass you need to make sure that the glass has room to expand and extract. If the door glass fits too tightly around the wood panels, it will break. To measure glass properly, take your measuring tape and measure the width and height past the wood panel and subtract one-eighth of an inch. This allows wiggle room for the glass.

Removing Wood Panels and Cleaning Frame

The wood around the glass is also known as “stops”. The stops must be removed from the door in order to take out the old glass and replace it with a new piece of glass. When removing the stops from the door, be careful not to break them. You can wiggle them around and see which ones are loose. From there the wood panels should be able to come off easily with a putty knife. Now, using your putty knife, clean up the wooden door frame by scraping away all of the old glazing compound.

Putting the New Glass Panel in Wood Door

Once you have removed all of the old glazing compound, get out your caulking gun and outline the wooden frame with new glazing compound. Take your new piece of glass (safety glass is recommended) and press the glass up against the opening outlined with caulk. To make sure that the new piece of glass stays secure in place, take glazing points and attach them to the glass and the wooden door. Once the glass is in place, reattach the wood stops to the door with wire brads and a hammer. And now you have a brand new piece of glass in your wooden door.
