Wood doors are a fantastic addition to any home. But when your beautiful wooden door is not properly sealed, you could end up with a warped door. A warped door can cause a number of problems such as having air escape or enter into your home, or allowing bugs and rodents to enter. A warped door is usually caused by too much moisture escaping or entering and being trapped inside of the door. Just because your door is slightly warped, does not mean you have to go out and buy a whole new one! If you’re wondering how to fix a warped door, it can be done with these simple and easy steps.
What You'll Need for Warped Door Repair
- Two Sawhorses
- Sandpaper
- Screwdriver
- Varnish
- Paintbrush
- 50-lb sandbag
Repairing and Fixing a Warped Door
Once you have the supplies you need, fixing a warped door is easy! First, place your sawhorses at least four to five feet apart in a covered area. Using the screwdriver, remove the door from its hinges and lay the door across the sawhorse with the bowed side facing up. After setting your door on the sawhorses, take your sandpaper and sand the top and bottom of the door.
How to Repair a Warped Door
Once you have taken the door off its hinges and sanded a small amount from the top and bottom, take your 50-lb sandbag and lay it on top of the warp. When you are flattening a warped door, leave the sandbag on the door for at least 24 hours or until the warp is gone. If you’re entire door is badly warped, wet some heavy towels or blankets and lay them across the warped area. Each day, add five to 10 pounds of weight to the door until it is straight again. Be sure to re-wet the towels every day so the wood becomes more flexible and easier to straighten or flatten. Whatever method you choose, make sure to paint a coat or two of varnish on the door so the warp is less likely to happen again.
